Workshops & Presentations

I offer a number of resources helpful in explaining the complexities of race relations in America and how we, as a society and as individuals, can go about doing our part in changing systems, practices, and attitudes around social inequities.

Words Mean Things

Are you up on the latest lingo? Keeping it fresh, poppin’, and on fleek? Do you really know what these words mean? This presentation will explore the appropriation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) “aka” Ebonics and explain how using words and phrases you don’t fully understand is actually harmful in ways much more impactful than you might think.

This presentation will focus on microaggressions within and targeted towards the gender and sexual minority community. Through discussion and case studies, participants will come away with a greater knowledge on microaggressions and ways to deal with them.

Stop Complaining & Start Advocating

Presented w/ Tiffany Lyons

Participants will gain knowledge about advocacy, identify different methods of advocacy, and discuss and identify situations on campus, in the Syracuse community, and the world at large that they might be able to change. Students will be taught the POWER (Prepare, Organize, Work, Evaluate, Rethink) method of addressing issues and learn to incorporate this into their future advocacy work.

STARTING THE CONVERSATION

Presented w/ Katie Mattise and Rosey M.

Audience members will engage in beginning to talk about race through sharing their first racialized experience in small groups. They will have time to reflect and write down what comes to mind. Facilitators will role model the activity and then have the participants do the same. This is to help participants (if they have not already) begin to start engaging in conversations around race and prep them to engage and participate throughout the rest of their day.

Processing Current Events

Often when shocking and traumatic events happen in the world, folks can experience feelings of  fear, hopelessness, and isolation. In an attempt to let people know that they are never alone, I often offer space for people to process with me and whoever else feels the need. This is an open forum of sorts that allows participants to scream, cry, and say what needs to be said to begin the healing process. These dialogues highlight the importance of understanding the effects of our actions and words.
